Large 19th century brick church on the hill across the valley from the older protestant church

      October 24, 2024

Church of the Holy Trinity in Dźwierzuty.

The church was built on the edge of the village of Dźwierzuty (formerly Swersutten, German: Mensguth). The village is located in the Szczytno district.

In the second half of the 19th century, the Catholic population of Dźwierzuty and the surrounding area increased. As a result of their efforts, on January 2, 1871, the new community was assigned a pastor. In the years 1873-1876, a site was purchased for the construction of a church. The foundation stone was blessed on May 18, 1880, and on September 19, 1883, the dean of Barczewo, Father Edward Stock, consecrated the church. The church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Bishop Filip Krementz on June 24, 1884. The parish was established on November 19, 1891.

It is an oriented, single-nave church, built in the neo-Gothic style, made of red brick, unplastered. On the west side, it is adjoined by a tower with a porch, topped with a pointed dome. There is also an entrance to the choir by a semi-cylindrical staircase by the tower. On the eastern side, there is a presbytery. The body of the building was buttressed, topped with stepped gables and a gable roof made of tiles. The pointed arch windows were filled with tracery. The interior of the nave was covered with a ceiling supported by wooden beams with crosswise supporting beams. In the presbytery, lower than the nave, a star vault was used. leksykonkultury.ceik.eu/index.php/Ko%C5%9Bci%C3%B3%C5%82_pw._Tr%C3%B3jcy_Przenaj%C5%9Bwi%C4%99tszej_w_D%C5%BAwierzutach
