The Aplerbeck Forest, a nature reserve in the Dortmund district of Aplerbeck, covers an area of 111.4 hectares and has been protected since 2005. This area serves as an island biotope and provides an important home for a variety of animal and plant species. The key protection measures include the preservation of water bodies, extensive grassland use and the preservation of mixed deciduous forests.

The biodiversity in the Aplerbeck Forest is particularly impressive. Over 100 species of birds, including the grey woodpecker, buzzard, tawny owl and long-eared owl, are native here. The forest is not only a paradise for nature lovers, but also a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. A well-known route leads from Schwerter Straße through the Aplerbeck and Schwerter Forest, past the Blauer See and the Freischütz climbing forest.

Historically, a temporary amphibian catch fence was erected as early as 1987 to protect the animals during the spawning season. From 2002, the road was closed to through traffic all year round and an amphibian tunnel was built to ensure the animals' migration.
