Please check local regulations for: Parco dell'Etna
The Silvestri Craters were created when Etna erupted in 1892 and stand as a gateway on both sides of the road to Rifugio Sapienza. Simple paths lead to the crater rims and the lower of the two craters can be viewed up close even with racing bike shoes.

Their formation dates back to the eruption of 1892: this began on July 9 with the formation of a radial fracture, and therefore of a buttonhole [1] of five craters, between 2025 and 1800 m, on the southern slope of the flanks of the volcano . It lasted 173 days and covered about 7 kilometres, until it reached the Monti Rossi on the eastern side, stopping just above Nicolosi, at an altitude of 970 m a.s.l.
