The Bretten market square and the old town hall are worth a visit even outside of the Peter and Paul Festival. Quiet, picturesque and with many places to stop for a bite to eat ☺️

Pretty little town, small but lovely, and absolutely worth seeing. You can have a good coffee here, for example after a nice hike in the area.

Only the current "Old Town Hall" protrudes into the market square, which had its highly praised, magnificent predecessor on this spot, which was destroyed in 1689 with all its glory and important archive. The official supervision, which had to ensure law and order, has always been present on the market square, and the council and court chambers as well as the citizens' hall were also in the right place here. The temporary town hall building built after 1689 was followed in 1787 by a council building that was also modest and soon inadequate, which, after a more extensive renovation and extension in 1888 and further changes, received its current appearance in the "German Renaissance" style.

The characteristics and fate of all the houses on the market square, most of which are marked with the year they were built, cannot be discussed in detail here. However, the current Hotel Krone deserves special mention. It was built on the site of a well-known medieval inn, which not only hosted merchants, troop leaders, scholars, pilgrims and students, but also princes, dukes and counts, and in 1550 even Emperor Charles V and his close entourage.

The current building was demolished before the Second World War due to the poor structural integrity of the successor inn, which was built partly with primitive means soon after the fire of 1689, and was rebuilt according to scale drawings and plans, and can be described as a successful restoration of the usual appearance. At the hotel entrance, the family coat of arms of the Paravicini family, who fled here from the Italian Valtellina via Switzerland after the Thirty Years' War and owned the property for a long time, is notable.
