Until the 1950s, geese waddle through Kirchhain's streets day in, day out. In the morning they went out to the goose pasture, and in the evening they returned to the town. They are "responsible" for the fact that the citizens of Kirchhain are also called "Kirchhain water geese".
To commemorate the tradition, a fountain was built at the lower end of the pedestrian zone in 1981. The artistic design was done by Alf Becker.
