Until 1877, the later Ernstbahn was still called the Issertalbahn and served the section of the line from Braunfels-Lahnbahnhof to the Braunfels district boundary (Ottilie mine). From June 1877, the line was then extended to Philippstein.
The line was then called the "Ernstbahn" in honor of Prince Ernst of Solms-Braunfels; it served exclusively as a mine railway, without public transport.
Prince Ernst of Solms-Braunfels was the founder and owner of this first narrow-gauge railway, as well as the companies Hermann Schreiber, Wissen, (Clöserweide mine) and De Dietrich & Cie., Niederbronn (Fortuna mine).
The first line was 5.0 km long, later this was extended to 6.3 km as far as Philippstein.

Very nice and easy to ride cycle path on the former railway line.

The former railway line has been transformed into a well-maintained cycle path.
