The culvert canal was artificially created at the beginning of the 20th century and is mainly used to keep the water level of the Wakenitz low. When the Elbe-Lübeck canal was built, the Falkendamm was built, thus interrupting the outflow of the Wakenitz. The water of the Wakenitz is diverted via the culvert canal and carried through a pipe system under the Elbe-Lübeck canal. In technical terms, this system is called a culvert, which is how it got its name.
