Breidenbach is a French commune with 312 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2021) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarreguemines, the canton of Bitche and is part of the cross-border Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve.
Breidenbach is located in the extreme northeast of Lorraine, a few kilometers south of the border with the Palatinate and north of Bitche at the confluence of the Breidenbach and Burbach.
The name Bredebach first appears in 1152, although according to evidence from 1172 it was probably a farm belonging to the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch. This became the property of the Cistercian Abbey of Neubourg near Haguenau and in the 14th century came to the Benedictine Abbey of Bouzonville. The town was almost completely wiped out during the Thirty Years' War. Settlers from Picardy repopulated the Olsberg annexes at the end of the 17th century. Breidenbach was briefly the capital of a canton from 1790 to 1801 and was then assigned to Volmunster until 2014.
