Located directly at Uhlandplatz and close to the S-Bahn station of the same name is the valley station of the Sommerbergbahn, Baden-Württemberg's highest funicular railway. It has connected the center of Bad Wildbad with the Sommerberg since 1908. The line is 738 meters long, with an elevation gain of 291 meters to the top station. The gradient ranges from 37 to 53 percent. The valley station was rebuilt between 1978 and 1980, but unfortunately, it's not exactly an architectural highlight. The separate biker access at the valley station provides a pleasant waiting area for all Sommerbergbahn passengers. Since the renovation in 2011, the carriage has been separated into separate compartments for pedestrians and bikers, improving the quality of travel.

Tickets can be purchased here at the valley station. After passing through the turnstile at the entrance, you have to wait in front of a glass door until about two minutes before departure. There are also very clean restrooms and a large information board explaining everything there is to do on the Sommerberg.

Shortly before departure, you can then board the waiting car on the platform. Only the lowest entrance is wheelchair accessible; as is typical for funicular railways, the car is constructed in steps, and the upper doors are only accessible by stairs.

🟦22. Uhlandplatz and Cable Car
The square in front of the valley station of the cable car has been called Uhlandplatz since the beginning of the 20th century. This is where the cable car to the Sommerberg, a "rail funicular," begins, built in 1907/08.

Some technical details:
37-52% gradient, 756 m track length, almost 800 m cable length, cable tested to 11 times the overload capacity, powered by a single 320 kW electric motor, travel speed up to 7 m per second, approximately 5-minute ride time, fourth-generation carriage with capacity for up to 65 people.
