The modern history of the Herculaneum Baths begins in the 18th century, when the Austrian Empire renovated and built most of the buildings that still exist today (the baths and pavilions). But the Apollo Baths had been in use since Roman times, and the Austrians built the current building over the Roman one. During the wars with the Ottomans, the Apollo Baths were burned down, after repairs they took on their current form: 3 large pools, many individual cabins. The sulphurous spring that feeds the pools is located right on the site (and the sulphurous water still flows).
