The Lippe is a 220-kilometer-long tributary of the Rhine and was the most important transport route for people and goods from Lippstadt to the Rhine in the 19th century.

The creation of the Lippe Lateral Canal was decided in 1905.

The Datteln-Hamm section was completed in 1914.

The expansion from Hamm was resumed between 1924 and 1926. The canal was to be extended from Hamm to Lippstadt with a port also planned in Lippetal-Hovestadt. The bridge abutments were completed for this canal expansion. The Second World War stopped all further work on this project.

After that, there were several more viability tests, but the canal project was no longer viable for economic reasons. It was not until the 1980 area development plan that the planned canal route was finally cancelled.
