This is a historically important site of the old Sanshu Kaido Saltroad (Shionomichi). The postal town of Ono-juku was the northern most point of the southern saltroad, where salt from the Pacific Ocean was traded. The saltroads and trading posts further north belonged to a different jurisdiction and only traded salt that was produced on the shores of the Sea of Japan. Ono-juku is a prefectural treasure of Nagano prefecture and historic post town of the Early Nakasendo.
