The Mönckebergbrunnen with its water-spouting sculptures is one of Hamburg's most popular monuments. Two acts with sea lions flank a stele crowned by a lion. The fountain in front of the former bookshop was built in the years between 1914 and 1926 according to the plans of the superintendent Fritz Schumacher. The design of the file with sea lions goes back to Georg Wrba, the lion is a free copy of the destroyed in World War II original.
