The lighthouse on the island of Poel was commissioned in 1871 and served for many decades as an important navigational aid for ships heading for the port of Wismar. It is still an active navigational aid today, guiding ships safely through the Baltic Sea with its dazzling white light. The lighthouse itself is a 21-meter-high, white round tower resting on a rectangular brick base.GOOD TO KNOW: Interestingly, the tower was originally powered by a kerosene lamp, which was later replaced by modern electric lighting.leuchtturm-insel-poel.de
