The largest honorary cemetery in Saarland. 2,460 dead rest here, including 1,510 fallen German soldiers and civilian war victims. 950 war dead come from other nations. They were mostly forced laborers and prisoners of war.

The cemetery lies within a former chain of bunkers of what was then the West Wall. Three large stone crosses stand on a blown up bunker at the back of the complex.

As a memorial to the endless number of war dead, such places - usually referred to as "war cemeteries" or "soldiers' cemeteries", sometimes also "honorary cemeteries" - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you said." However, the many people buried here were by no means divorced in peace, but became victims of the war and an inhuman tyranny.

The most important and at the same time everlasting function of the soldiers' or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is therefore to keep the memory of this suffering alive and – every generation anew (!) – to remind people of the lasting preservation of peace.

The cemetery was extensively renovated in 1975 by the air landing company of the parachute battalion 263 Saarlouis and the community of Schwalbach. Every year, the central commemoration of the community of Schwalbach takes place at the Ehrenfriedhof Elm / Sprengen to commemorate the war dead and the tyranny of the two world wars.
