To the right and left of the canal there is a long and level path with many old locks and lock keepers' houses. Information boards can be found again and again and make the trip along the canal quite entertaining. There are several places to stop for a break along the canal. The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal (also called Ludwig Canal or regionally "Old Canal") was the first waterway to be built, which was built in the 19th century. Europe should connect. Construction began in 1836 and up to 9,000 workers were temporarily employed on the building. The 178 km long structure was officially inaugurated in 1846.

The typical lock keeper cottages on the canal are very well preserved and mostly inhabited.
