It has now been renaturalized and redesigned to be a beautiful stream in a way that is mostly true to nature. There is not much left of the stinking sewer and in many places you can even walk along the Emscher. Where renaturalization has taken place, just immerse yourself in nature and take a look - it is definitely worth it
