The Republic of Venice decided, in the mid-sixteenth century, to reclaim the large marshy area between the Bisatto canal and the Euganean Hills.
He then brought together the owners of the area in the "Retratto di Monselice" consortium which dug drainage channels, which are still functioning today, and built, in 1557, the canal bridge which allows the flow of spring and rainwater from the Selvatiche valleys below the canal Bisatto.
The exceptional nature and daring of the complex hydraulic work struck the French traveler Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) who described it extensively in his "Journal de voyage en Italie" in 1580; the presence of a second bridge that crossed the canal
Bisatto made the writer exclaim; Since other ships are constantly passing over the canal, while vehicles are passing on the top of the bridge, there are three roads one above the other".
