The building, which was constructed between 1925 and 1927, housed a long-distance telephone exchange. In 1945, it became an international long-distance telephone exchange and central radio hub for East Berlin. In addition to the German Post Office, Soviet secret service employees and Stasi technicians were temporarily deployed here for secret police tasks. Today, it is a residential complex. A plaque in front of the building provides information about this.
