Lake Mahinapua was originally a lagoon, but shifting dunes eventually separated the lagoon from the Tasman Sea and turned the body of water into an inland lake. Today, a strip between about 980 m and 1500 m wide separates the lake from the Tasman Sea.

In 1907 the lake and the land surrounding it was designated a Scenic Reserve, similar to a National Park, and in 2012 the newly created Treetop Walk provided views of the lake. (see Wikipedia)
