Visible from afar, the church, with its exposed location high above the Neffelbach, gives the place its name. For church buildings, the high location near flowing water was appropriate, as the church was considered by every believer to be an eternal image of heaven. Its continued existence was therefore very important. The originally single-aisled Romanesque building was converted into a two-aisled hall around 1500. The west tower, dating back to the 11th century, is particularly impressive, with Roman bricks evident in its masonry.
