The White Elster (Czech: Bílý Halštrov) is a 257-kilometer[3] long right tributary of the Saale, of which the share in Germany is 245.4 kilometers. It rises in the Czech Republic in the Elster Mountains east of Aš (Asch), about one kilometer as the crow flies from the German-Czech border (west of the border stone 5/18)[4] near Bärendorf, not far from the village of Výhledy (Steingrün). It flows through the cities of Plauen, Gera and Leipzig and flows into the Saale in the south of the Halle district of Silberhöhe.The White Elster was voted "River Landscape of the Year 2020/2021" by the German Anglers' Association and the Friends of Nature in Germany.[5]

Name
The name Elster has nothing to do with the bird. Its basic form Al-astra or Al-istra belongs to the Indo-European el-/ol- for flow, stream with the Germanic ending -str. River names that go back to the same basic form can be found all over Europe (for example Alster).[6] In Slavic, "Alstrawa" means the rushing one.[7]Until the 17th century, the name Schwarze Elster was used for the Schwarzbach, which flows into the Weiße Elster in Adorf/Vogtl., from which the Weiße Elster differed with its lighter, turbid water, which may have led to the name Weiße Elster.[8] The water of the Schwarzbach contains iron and is therefore darker. The name should not be confused with the Schwarze Elster, a right tributary of the Elbe that rises in Lusatia; the Weiße Elster does not come into contact with it.In the upper reaches of the river, the Elster Mountains were named after the White Elster. They extend over areas of the Saxon and Bohemian Vogtland. The Elster glaciation, the oldest glaciation of the current ice age, which led to large-scale glaciation in northern Germany, was also named after the White Elster.
