Kipton was one of several important stops along the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. It was also the site of a famous train wreck in 1891, that led to important changes in railroad safety. There is a plaque to commemorate the incident.

While the railroad is no longer active, the North Coast Inland Trail runs through town.
