The port town of Concarneau, with its almost 20,000 inhabitants, is located in one of the most beautiful bays in Brittany. This attractive tourist destination is famous for its old town, the "Ville Close", which is surrounded by fortress walls. The site of today's Concarneau was first settled in the 10th century by monks from the Landévennec Abbey. They built a small monastery on an island at the mouth of the Moros River (today's "Ville Close"). Concarneau later developed into an important Breton fortress. Since the 12th century, the old town has been connected to the mainland by a bridge. The "Ville Close" was once built as an island fortress in the harbor. Despite its location, the fortified complex did not withstand all attacks. The flags on the towers changed color several times, especially during the conflicts over Brittany's affiliation to France and during the religious wars of the 16th century. For a time, the “Ville Close” was also considered a feared refuge for thieves and pirates. Even today, residents and visitors can access the walled island via a small bridge.

The Ville close is home to the oldest residential buildings in Concarneau. The narrow streets are home to impressive granite gabled houses, half-timbered houses (Maisons à Pans de Bois), shops with carved lintels and chapels that have been converted into residential buildings.
