The undisputed landmark of Mergozzo is undoubtedly the Olmo secolare, a centuries-old, completely hollow elm tree, located on the lakeshore in the middle of the main square of the city.
The elm had been present in Mergozzo since 1600, as the oldest depiction of the place shows: the altarpiece of the Madonna del Rosario, painted in 1623 by Carolus Canis and kept in the parish church.
