Brief description
The "Schachen and Reintal" nature reserve
is the heart of the Wetterstein Mountains, a mountain group in the northern limestone Alps. The Schachen itself is a vantage point in the Wetterstein Mountains at over 1,800 meters, which offers a view of the Reintal, among other things.
The landscape is characterized by alpine grasslands, rocky landscapes, scree fields, as well as high-altitude spruce forests, larch-stone pine forests, mixed mountain forests and mountain pines.
The near-natural limestone dry grasslands, ravine, mixed slope and floodplain forests make the Natura 2000 area in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district an important alpine protected area with significant populations of the rock ptarmigan
and the endangered Black grouse.
It is also a habitat for animal species such as chamois, Alpine marmots, Alpine choughs, Alpine salamanders, adders, golden eagles and many species of martens.
