Before 1919, the town hall of the former municipality of Hindeloopen was located in a two-aisled building at Dijkweg 3. The building dates from 1682 or 1683.[1] In 1823, the entrance to the building was moved to the eastern side. The framed entrance is above the landing. Above here again, on a tympanum, is the statue of Lady Justice. There is a cache in the basement. The building also served as a weighing house. In 1917, the then municipality of Hindeloopen was presented with the art and antiques collection with a large collection of Hindelooper objects from Hidde Nijland. The condition of the donation was that the collection had to be exhibited in the town hall on Dijkweg. The municipality accepted the collection and started looking for a new home for the town hall. The building on the Dijkweg was converted into a museum and was given the name Hidde Nijland Museum, from 2008 onwards called Museum Hindeloopen. The building is recognized as a national monument.
