As early as the 14th century (from 1363), the first water-powered hemp mills (Plaueln) existed on the Mühlbach stream.
Around 1500, numerous regulations already existed, and in 1578, a dedicated "Hänferordnung" (hemp ordinance).
Old place names like Hänferstück or Plauelmatten bear witness to this history to this day.
The processed hemp bundles (,,Docken") were sold far beyond the region - as far as the Netherlands and Bohemia.
From 1850 onwards, new means of transport brought cheaper competition from overseas, which displaced domestic cultivation.
