De Rat is an octagonal tower mill in IJlst and was built in 1828. Next to the windmill is the miller's house. De Rat is one of three sawmills in Friesland. The others are the De Jager in Woudsend and De Zwaluw in Birdaard. The mill comes from the Zaan region and was built in 1683 as a sawmill

This old sawmill is still in full operation and well worth a visit and to see the sawing process of the tree trunks by the mill.
