The centuries-old sawmill 'De Rat' is located on the Frisian Geeuw River between the towns of IJlst and Sneek. This mill was built in 1683 but is still in operation today. 'De Rat' means "the rat" in English and specializes in sawing pine, larch, and elm.

De Rat is an octagonal tower mill in IJlst and was built in 1828. Next to the windmill is the miller's house. De Rat is one of three sawmills in Friesland. The others are the De Jager in Woudsend and De Zwaluw in Birdaard. The mill comes from the Zaan region and was built in 1683 as a sawmill
