The Sundische Wiese or Wische, also called “bei den Häuser” until the 19th century, is very old property of the city of Stralsund, acquired before 1290. Other sources report that this “grassy steppe” was once given to the city of Stralsund by the Hiddensee monastery. Then in 1937 the order came for a complete evacuation. The fascist air force needed a bombing range. The Sundische Wiese was thus depopulated and the empty farms served as targets. After the end of the war, farmers slowly returned and worked the devastated land with great enthusiasm, so that in 1964 the state-owned Zingst-Darß estate was founded. The "little castle" was a popular children's holiday camp at that time. Here, many children's dreams of a holiday on the Baltic Sea came true. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, sales and speculation began again with land that could not be increased at will. An evil that continues to this day.
But another dream also became reality: the Sundische Wiese was incorporated into the "Vorpommern Boddenlandschaft" national park. The unique, unspoilt landscape can now recover from the constraints that humans once imposed on it and become a natural refuge with the animals and plants that live there. The "little castle" has been welcoming guests and day-trippers again since July 17, 1994, because the Kiel entrepreneur Hans-Hermann Johnson has made the dream of a little castle by the sea a reality again.
