The Günther Messner Bivacco was set up in 1972 at an altitude of 2,529 metres in the Pfitsch valley. It was located below the ice wall of the Hochferner and the Hochfeiler, near the Austrian border.

In 1972, when the Bivacco was set up, the South Tyrolean Automony Statute came into force. In 1919, Tyrol was divided with the Peace Treaties of St. Germain.

A Bivacco is generally a small and simple structure. It should be both a place of refuge and a place of encounter, understanding and confrontation.

The Bivacco project was launched on the centenary of the Peace Treaties of St. Germain. It was exhibited at the 58th Venice Art Biennale. The Bivacco is an allegory of Italy in the middle of the Alps, a country that has always been crossed by people and animals. The idea was therefore to eliminate the power of borders so that people could cross them. The sea and the Alps are closely linked.
