The Molenvijver in Genk is a popular recreational area surrounded by the Molenvijverpark, a beautiful city park. Located close to the center of Genk, the pond and surrounding park offer visitors a peaceful escape in a green environment. The Molenvijver itself was created by a weir, which was once used to generate water power for the mills in the area. The park and pond owe their name to these historic mill activities.

The Molenvijver was originally a very wet marshland, interspersed with the Dorpsbeek. This Dorpsbeek provided drainage for the area right through the centre of Genk and used to feed a watermill, known today as the restaurant ‘de Molen’. In 1967, the city park was laid out. The marshes were filled in with fill soil and the wet meadows were drained. The Molenvijver was preserved and deepened, a second pond, the breeding pond, was constructed. The Dorpsbeek was given a permanent bed. It served to supply fresh water for the fishpond. Further to the east, the large grassland was drained and restored. The ban watermill already existed in the 9th century. All farmers in the area were obliged to have their grain ground here (bannum means commandment). The elongated pond (stegering) served as a collection basin to supply the necessary water power to the mill wheel. Until 1366, the mill belonged to a lord of the manor. After that it was dependent on the Prince-Bishop of Liège. In 1773 the mill came into the possession of the municipality. It was in service until about 1930. It is currently run as a restaurant.

It owes its name to the pond along the old water mill, which is now a restaurant. Dream with a good book, feed the ducks, take a breather on a bench, have a picnic...
