Father Marco di Aviano, among the most important in the religious and political history of seventeenth-century Europe, was born in Aviano, Friuli, on 17 November 1631 into the Cristofori family and was baptized with the name Carlo Domenico.

Having joined the Capuchins in 1648, he was ordained a priest in 1655. An exceptional preacher, herald of peace and forgiveness in many nations and cities of Europe, he was defined as the miracle worker of the century by Pope Innocent XI for the countless wonders that accompanied his apostolate. Advisor and spiritual father of the Emperor of Austria Leopold I, he was a fervent supporter of the unity of European states in the face of the common danger of the Ottoman invasion which reached the gates of Vienna in 1683. If on 12 September of that year Marco d'Aviano, sent by the Pope to encourage the defenders of Christianity, had not implored God for the liberation of the capital of the Empire, European history would have taken a different course.
