Riding up Big Thompson Canyon is an exhilarating, challenging experience for any rider local to, or visiting, the area. The canyon is located in northern Colorado and runs up from Loveland to Estes Park through the small town of Drake, following the Big Thompson River. Starting in Loveland, you climb up U.S. Highway 34, through the canyon towards Estes Park. Although there is a shoulder, please use caution when riding; the road is narrow and twisting and drivers are often distracted by the great views of towering cliffs, lush forests, and the flowing river. During peak seasons in the summertime, you are often sharing the road with large, oversized vehicles like RVs and trucks. Along the way, there are several pull-off areas where you can rest (from both the climb and the cars), hydrate, and take in the scenery.
