The area (designated as a nature reserve in 1994 and owned by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation) is located in the area of the municipalities of Engelskirchen and Wiehl and includes large parts of the elongated north and north-east slopes of the Immerkopf. A special feature of the area are the springs and large slope spring swamps with moor-like vegetation in places. These slope moors, like heaths and coppice forests, are part of the historical cultural landscape in the Oberberg region.
