From Rinzenberg, the trail climbs steeply to Wehlenstein. The trail follows narrow, steep switchbacks, passing a slope where many spruce trees had to be felled due to bark beetle damage. Here, the effects of man-made climate change—dry summers and the subsequent damage caused by bark beetles to diseased trees—are directly felt. This raises the question of how we treat God's creation. But you can also see how nature is reclaiming the land. Purple foxglove (a pioneer plant?) is blooming everywhere, and small trees are already growing again.
