Tips

  • Maen Castle, near Sennen Harbour north of Land's End in Cornwall, is the westernmost promontory fort in England. It is a good example of the approximately 30 Iron Age fortifications in Cornwall, also known as "cliff castles".Maen Castle, like Trevelgue Head, has two semi-circular ditches (Treryn Dinas has three) over the neck of a headland. It is one of the two oldest datable promontory forts in Cornwall and dates from around 500 BC. Excavations took place in 1939 and 1948-1949. The approximately 300 potsherds found cover the period from 400 BC to 400 AD.According to legend, the giant "Myen Du" is said to have lived here.
