The surprise in this long and wide valley is, that all the rainwater that falls in this gigantic watershed of hundreds of miles in all directions heads to this deepest place, filling Alkali Lake, but: it has no river outflow. Everything evaporates. What remains is salt and minerals: alkali. The lake water far away in the middle of the salty white plain is thick and salty.
