The peas are specifically grown for the frozen food market and will be harvested at peak maturity in July. Following harvest, the peas will be transported to a nearby processing facility in Eyemouth for rapid freezing within 150 minutes. This swift processing technique helps preserve the quality, flavor, and nutritional value of the peas. Each field is estimated to yield enough peas for over 40,000 individual frozen food packs, destined for distribution to supermarkets including Aldi, Asda, Co-op, and Morrisons. Notably, peas have the beneficial ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, eliminating the need for artificial nitrogen fertilizers in this crop. This process also reduces nitrogen fertilizer requirements for subsequent crops planted in rotation, such as wheat.
