A former railway bridge, the Hownsgill was constructed by Stanhope and Tyne Railway from 1832 to 1834. Designed by engineer Robert Stephenson, the bridge is 690 feet (210 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) high with twelve pillars. The viaduct was closed to passenger service in 1955, before being fully closed in the 1980s, when the tracks were lifted.

Today, the viaduct is managed by Sustrans and part of the C2C cycle route.

Im pleased there's a cage on top of here as you could easily get blown off in high winds, especially after a few beers, nothing better than a pub stop when your riding hard... after crossing, heading toward Sunderland on the C2C route, there's a right turn, almost like a little dirt slip road which will take you to Hownsgill Farm Tearoom... Delicious.

Perfect for those who love a symmetry shot. It’s just a shame you can’t see what you’re riding/walking over however, it does offer an amazing view. PS.. it also sits on one of the best cycle routes in the UK?
