The red color of the Spree is caused by suspended iron oxide. This process is called "ochre formation" and is a late consequence of brown coal mining. The brown, iron-rich water endangers nature and tourism in the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. At first, the ochre formation was only observed in the upper reaches of the rivers, i.e. the many small canals, especially south of the Spreewald. But the brown mud is spreading further and further.
