Sumierz is one of the Kolumbroda Forests, where there is a nature reserve (currently a field altar). During the period of persecution of the Uniates (1867 - 1905), it was a place where the Uniates gathered for secret retreats or missions led by missionaries who came from Galicia under the Austrian partition, especially the Jesuits. Weddings and baptisms also took place there.
