Since the mid-19th century, the square was covered with tenement houses, but they were demolished during the war. During the Polish People's Republic, a monument to General Karol Świerczewski was placed on this square, and the square itself was named after him. In 1990, the figure and later the plinth of the Świerczewski monument disappeared. For many years the square remained undeveloped. It was only in 2007 that the square underwent revitalization. The surface was replaced, vegetation was planted, a spectacular fountain was built, and a monument to the Holy Father was placed in the central place. John Paul II. Today it is a very nice place, perfect to rest for a while while exploring the city. There are benches in the square and several eating places around.
