Statue built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in America. The bronze plaques depict scenes from his life. The statue was originally supposed to be erected in Havana, Cuba, but this was canceled due to Cuba's independence from Spain and local unrest. Valladolid was chosen instead, as the city is also the place of Columbus' death.
