The history of this pleasant flowered village merges with that of the castle. The origin of the name of Montellier was glimpsed by the Burgundian historian Courtépée: "height on the track".
The seigniory of Montellier, under the suzerainty of the Lords of Thoire-Villars from the 12th to the 15th century, was first owned by gentlemen named Montellier, a family which died out at the beginning of the 14th century.
