A little off the main route, within sight of the fortress's loading bridge, there is a very good sandy beach. Also not unimportant: a few trees provide shade here.

The beach is located directly opposite the Grauer Ort fortress grounds. Highly recommended 👍🏼.

The Grauerort Fortress was decommissioned from its original function as an artillery fort as early as 1895. During the First World War, it was used as a temporary depot for sea mines, a use that became permanent from 1922 onwards.

In 1926, the Grauerort Fortress received its own landing pier, from which the sea mines were loaded until 1945. A narrow-gauge railway, now known as the Groveblitz, transported the mines from the fort to the ships.

From 1948 until the 1960s, a restaurant called Klein Helgoland (Little Helgoland) stood on the landing pier, serving as a stop for Hamburg excursion boats. Later, the historic building was relocated to Kirchstraße and is now the Bützfleth shooting range.

The former landing pier is currently closed for safety reasons. However, the fine sandy beach, the expansive view across the Elbe River, and the large ships still make a visit to this site worthwhile. Sunbathers can also relax and unwind here. The beach is not usually crowded.
