    Altgutenstein ruins
    "Burgfelden"

The castle was probably built in the second half of the 12th century.
The noble family of Gutenstein can be traced back to 1212/1279.
In 1303 the rule passed to the Habsburgs, who mortgaged it to the Magenbuchers in 1307, to the Ramspergers at the end of the 14th century, and to the Counts of Zimmern in 1455.
In 1595 the property returned to the Habsburgs.
The castle fell into disrepair and was demolished.
Remains of the walls of the residential tower, the lower castle and the moat are still there.

Is Altgutenstein Castle Ruin accessible by public transport?

While the castle ruin is nestled in a rural area, public transport options exist, though they may require some planning. Checking local bus schedules in advance is recommended.

Are there specific trails around Altgutenstein Castle Ruin that are suitable for families with young children?

Yes, the renovated ruins and the immediate circular walk around the inner ward are generally suitable for families. The paths within the castle are well-maintained, and the historical information boards can engage older children. For younger children, the main paths leading directly to the castle are manageable, though some elevation gain is involved. Always consider your children's stamina and choose shorter, less strenuous routes if needed.

    Is Altgutenstein Castle Ruin dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome at Altgutenstein Castle Ruin and on the surrounding trails. It's a great spot for a walk with your canine companion. Please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially within the castle grounds and near other visitors, and remember to clean up after them to maintain the site's cleanliness for everyone.

What are the parking options available at Altgutenstein Castle Ruin?

Parking is generally available near the castle ruin. However, as it's a popular destination, especially on weekends and during peak season, parking spots can fill up quickly. Arriving earlier in the day is often recommended to secure a convenient spot. There are no specific permits required for parking, but always check for any local signage regarding parking regulations.

How challenging is the terrain and elevation gain when hiking to Altgutenstein Castle Ruin?

The castle ruin is situated on a ridge, meaning there is some elevation gain to reach it. The trails leading up to the castle are generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. While not overly steep, they do involve uphill sections. Comfortable footwear is highly recommended for exploring both the trails and the castle grounds.
