The first structure or settlement dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century. Destroyed in the earthquake of 1627, it was rebuilt during the same century. Between 1801 and 1804 the church was entirely rebuilt, larger than the seventeenth-century one, in its current late-baroque features, at the behest of the Confraternity of the SS.
