The source of the spring, which has been used by the residents since ancient times, used to be above its current location. It was only after it was moved further into the village towards the end of the 19th century and a wall was built around it and an outlet in the form of a cast-iron pump housing was added that the spring took on its current appearance. The name refers to the appearance of an upside-down (tobacco) pipe on a pole, but we have to resort to the Low German language that was spoken everywhere by the rural population at the time:
Piep = pipe Pahl = pole, mast
Piepenpahl = pipe pole, pole pipe
