The Hauke-Haie-Koog is an important resting and moulting area for many species of birds in the Wadden Sea. Every year in spring and autumn, during migration, thousands of geese come to the Hauke-Haie-Koog to rest and moult. Large flocks of dunlins also use this area as a high-water resting place. Avocets, terns, and various songbird species such as reed buntings, bearded tits and sedge warblers use the Koog with its wide reed areas as a breeding area. Marsh harriers, greylag geese, bitterns and various species of ducks also settle here to raise their young.
